Q&A with Kasey & Blake Kaur

Q: How did you get into farming?

A: Our grandfather moved from Helvetia and my father took [over the farm], and now Blake and I are running it. [It’s a] third generation farm.

Q: How long have you worked with Oregon Blueberry?

A: We’ve been working with Oregon Blueberry for 13 years. When we started out in the business 13 years ago, my dad was using Oregon Blueberry, and so we’ve followed along and had quality product that we keep coming back to.

Q: What do you like most about working with Oregon Blueberry?

A: Doug’s great. Everyone over there is super professional, the plants are really good. They run a nice operation, high quality plants… They haven’t let us down yet!

Q: What sets Oregon Blueberry apart in the industry in terms of their customer service?

A: When we call they usually get our plants ready right away, it’s in and out. Oregon Blueberry is local, so it’s easy for us to just come and grab them.

Q: What sets Oregon Blueberry apart in the industry in terms of their farming knowledge?

A: Oregon Blueberry has been doing blueberries for a long time, so they’re very knowledgeable about new varieties, how to prune, how to manage pre-existing blueberry fields… every blueberry variety has their own requirements, they’ve got them pretty dialed in.

Q: What sets Oregon Blueberry apart in the industry in terms of the quality of their product?

A: Oregon Blueberry has very high quality products and their new varieties are very desirable and very sought after in the marketplace. They breed for better plants and stay up with what the market demands.

Q: What is the best tip you’ve received from Oregon Blueberry?

A: Oregon Blueberry’s helped us out with pruning requirements for each variety. That’s huge – every [variety] has their own requirements to yield good fruit, whether you’re going fresh market or frozen.

Q: What has inspired you to continue working with Oregon Blueberry for the amount of time you have?

A: It’s probably the people. Oregon Blueberry is always able to help us, guide us, and teach us on new varieties and new things coming down in the blueberry industry.

Q: What do you think your partnership with Oregon Blueberry will look like in the future?

A: Kaur Family Farms will always have a partnership with Oregon Blueberry if we plant new varieties in the future, and [for] helping us maintain our old varieties. As long as we’re in the blueberry business, we’ll be in partnership with them in some way.
